Engine Exhaust System Complaint/Condition Chart

Leaking Exhaust Gases	Leaks at pipe joints	Weld the joints.
	Damaged or improperly installed gaskets.	Replace the gaskets as necessary.
	Loose exhaust pipe connections.	Tighten the stud nuts or bolts to specification.
	Burned or rusted out exhaust pipes.	Replace as required.
Exhaust Noises (including noises at various road speeds and idle).	Leaks at the manifold or pipe connections.	Tighten the leaking connection fasteners to specified torque. Replace the gasket as required.
	Damaged flex pipe.	Replace the front exhaust pipe.
	Burned or blown out muffler.	Replace the muffler assembly.
	Burned or rusted out exhaust pipe/resonator.	Replace the exhaust pipe assembly.
	Exhaust pipe leaking at the muffler flange.	Tighten the attachment nuts.
	Exhaust pipe/muffler hangers damaged, missing or binding.	or
	Exhaust manifold cracked or broken.	Replace the manifold.
	Leak between the manifold and cylinder head.	Replace the gaskets and tighten the manifold to cylinder head stud nuts or bolts to specifications.
Loss of Engine Power and/or Internal Rattles in the muffler.	Dislodged tuning tubes and/or baffles in the muffler.	Replace the muffler.
Poor acceleration and/or hesitation.	Damaged exhaust pipe.	Replace the exhaust pipe.
Poor acceleration and/or hesitation.	Plugged 3-way catalytic converter (may result from a serious engine malfunction).	Inspect the exhaust back pressure and replace the 3-way catalytic converter, exhaust pipe, or muffler as required.
