Test C: Chime Always On

  1. Perform audible warnings system diagnostic system check. See AUDIBLE WARNINGS SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If audible warnings system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step.
  2. Check if any indicators illuminate when chime sounds. If no indicators illuminate when chime sounds, go to next step. If any indicators illuminate when chime sounds, perform symptom test appropriate to illuminated indicator. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove key from ignition lock cylinder. Ensure headlights are off. Open driver's door. If chime sounds, go to next step. If chime does not sound, check for intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  . Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  12 .
  4. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, perform CHIME TEST in RADIO. If chime stops when OFF is selected, go to next step. If chime does not stop when OFF is selected, go to step  10 .
  5. Using scan tool, observe PARKLAMP SWITCH parameter in BODY CONTROL MODULE INPUTS data list. If scan tool displays INACTIVE, go to next step. If scan tool does not display INACTIVE, check if park lights are always illuminated. Repair as necessary. See HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS & DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS in appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
  6. Using scan tool, observe HEADLIGHT SWITCH parameter in BODY CONTROL MODULE INPUTS data list. If scan tool displays INACTIVE, go to next step. If scan tool does not display INACTIVE, check if headlights are always illuminated. Repair as necessary. See HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS & DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS in appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) Gray, 16-pin connector C3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe KEY IN IGNITION parameter in BODY CONTROL MODULE INPUTS data list. If scan tool displays INACTIVE, go to next step. If scan tool does not display INACTIVE, go to step  11 .
  8. Check for short to ground in Light Green wire between ignition switch Natural 6-pin connector C1 terminal "D" and BCM Gray, 16-pin connector C3 terminal B1. See Figure . Repair as necessary and go to step  12 . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If wire is okay, go to next step.
  9. Replace ignition switch and go to step  12 . See IGNITION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  10. Replace and reprogram radio. If vehicle is not equipped with radio, replace and reprogram multifunction alarm module. See RADIO  or MULTIFUNCTION ALARM MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  12 .
  11. Replace and reprogram BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - IMPALA & MONTE CARLO article. After repair, go to next step.
  12. Operate system to verify repair. If system operates normally, repair is complete. If system does not operate normally, return to step  3 .
