Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Buick Century. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE Battery.
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM in Engine Cooling.
  3. Drain the engine oil. Refer to ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER REPLACEMENT  .
  4. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to COOLANT RECOVERY RESERVOIR REPLACEMENT in Engine Cooling.
  5. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to CRANKSHAFT BALANCER REPLACEMENT  .
  6. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to DRIVE BELT TENSIONER REPLACEMENT  .
  7. Remove the power steering pump with lines. Move the power steering pump aside. Refer to POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT (3.1L) in Power Steering System.
  8. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe from the engine front cover. Refer to THERMOSTAT BYPASS PIPES REPLACEMENT in Engine Cooling.
  9. Remove the radiator outlet hose from the coolant pump. Refer to RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - OUTLET (3.1L) in Engine Cooling.
  10. Remove the drive belt shield bolt and the shield.

  11. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  12. Remove the water pump pulley.
  13. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector.
  14. Remove the lower crankshaft position sensor wiring harness bracket bolt and the bracket from the engine front cover.

  15. Remove the engine front cover bolts (1, 2, 3).
  16. Remove the engine front cover.

  17. Remove the engine front cover gasket.

  18. Clean the engine front cover and engine block gasket mating surfaces.
  19. Inspect the engine front cover for damage to the engine front cover, crankshaft front oil seal or the gasket mating surface.
  20. If replacing the engine front cover, remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover. Refer to CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR in Removal & Installation.
  21. If replacing the engine front cover, remove the water pump from the engine front cover. Refer to WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT (3.1L) in Engine Cooling.
