Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, and 2003 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the rack and pinion assembly (3) into the vehicle.
    NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE .
  2. Install the rack and pinion assembly mounting bolts (4), the washers (2) and the nuts (1).

    Tighten 

    Tighten the nuts to 185 N.m (136 lb ft).

  4. Install the intermediate shaft to the rack and pinion assembly.
  5. Install the coupler clamp bolt to the intermediate shaft.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolt to 45 N.m (33 lb ft).

  7. Install the power steering low pressure hose (1) to the rack and pinion assembly (3).
  8. Install the power steering high pressure hose (2) to the rack and pinion assembly (3).

    Tighten 

    Tighten the hoses to 28 N.m (20 lb ft).

  9. Install the engine protection shield, if equipped.
  10. Install the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Refer to Tie Rod End Replacement - Outer .
  11. Install the stabilizer shaft. Refer to STABILIZER SHAFT REPLACEMENT  .

  13. If the steering gear is equipped with a ground strap, install the ground strap to the crossmember bracket.
    • Place the ground strap on the left side of the bracket and mark the location.
    • Center punch the bolt hole location.
    • Drill a hole using a 7 mm (9/32 in) drill bit.
    • Install the bolt and washer retaining the ground strap to the crossmember.

      Tighten 

      Tighten the bolt to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

  14. Install both of the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .

  16. Remove the safety stands.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System .
