Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Oldsmobile Bravada, 2003 GMC Envoy XL, 2003 GMC Envoy, and 2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the radiator intake baffle. Refer to AIR INTAKE BAFFLE REPLACEMENT - RADIATOR  in Body Front End.
  2. Remove the grill. Refer to GRILLE REPLACEMENT (GMC)  or GRILLE REPLACEMENT (OLDSMOBILE)  or GRILLE REPLACEMENT (CHEVROLET)  in Exterior Trim.
    IMPORTANT: When removing the diagonal brace, only remove the one bolt from the battery tray brace that is bolted to the radiator brace.

  3. Remove the radiator support diagonal brace.

    Refer to BRACE REPLACEMENT - RADIATOR SUPPORT DIAGONAL  in Body Front End.

  4. Remove the hood latch support. Refer to HOOD LATCH SUPPORT REPLACEMENT  in Body Front End.
  5. Remove the cooling fan and shroud. Refer to COOLING FAN AND SHROUD REPLACEMENT  in Engine Cooling.
  6. Remove the drive belt. Refer to DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT   .
  7. Carefully loosen and remove the balancer bolt.
  8. Install J 41816-2  into the end of the crankshaft.
    IMPORTANT: Do not pull on outer edge of the crankshaft balancer.
  9. Using the J 44226  remove the balancer.
  10. Remove J 44226  and J 41816-2  .
  11. Remove the crankshaft balancer shim from the crankshaft snout.
  12. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Cleaning and Inspection .
