Removal Procedure
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada, 2004 GMC Envoy XUV, 2004 GMC Envoy XL, 2004 GMC Envoy, and 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Disconnect the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Engine Electrical.
- Remove the filler tube nut (2) located on the right side of the engine.
- Remove the filler tube from the stud (1) on the right side of the engine.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
- Drain the transmission fluid if necessary. Refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid/Filter Replacement .
- If equipped with 2 wheel drive (2WD) Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - Rear in Propeller Shaft.
- If equipped with 4 wheel drive (4WD) Remove the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement in Transfer Case - NVG 126-NP4 or Transfer Case Assembly Replacement (TrailBlazer, Envoy) in Transfer Case - NVG 226-NP8 depending on the model of transfer case the vehicle is equipped with.
- Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
- Remove the fuel tank shield if equipped. Refer to Fuel Tank Shield Replacement (TrailBlazer, Envoy) or Fuel Tank Shield Replacement (TrailBlazer EXT, Envoy XL) in Frame and Underbody.
- Remove the transmission support. Refer to Transmission Support Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
- Remove the transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement (4.2L) or Transmission Mount Replacement (5.3L) .
- Remove the catalytic converter assembly. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement (4.2L Engine) or Catalytic Converter Replacement (5.3L Engine) in Engine Exhaust.
- Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.
- Remove the range selector cable end from the transmission range selector lever ball stud (6) and the bracket (1). Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement .
- Remove the transmission heat shield. Refer to Heat Shield Replacement .
- Disconnect the transmission vent hose from the transmission.
- Disconnect the main electrical connector from the transmission.
- Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement .
- Remove the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.
- Remove the torque converter access plug.
- Mark the flywheel and torque converter orientation for reassembly.
- Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Use care not to drop the bolts into the bell housing.
- Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement (Body Vin Code 3 LL8) or Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement (Body Vin Code 6 LL8) or Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement (Body Vin Code 6 LM4) .
- Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
- Remove the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the bell housing.
- Remove the bolts (1,2) that secure the coolant pipe to the bell housing.
- Install a safety chain around the transmission.
- Remove the remaining nuts, studs and/or bolts that secure the transmission to the engine.
- Install the J 21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
- Pull the transmission straight back to clear the torque converter.
- Lower the transmission away from the vehicle.
