Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 2:  This step tests for proper reference voltage to the transfer case shift control module on the 4WD LO circuit.
  2. 3:  This step tests the 4WD LO circuit for a short to voltage.
  3. 4:  This step tests the 4WD LO circuit for an open or high resistance.
  4. 5:  This step repairs the 4WD LO circuit for a short to voltage.

1 Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Transfer Case? - Go to Step 2  Go to Diagnostic System Check - Transfer Case

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the transfer case shift control module.
  3. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  4. Measure the voltage between the 4WD LO circuit harness and ground.
Is the voltage reading within the specified values?		 11-13.5 V Go to Step 3  Go to Step 4

  1. Disconnect the PCM.
  2. Measure the voltage between the 4WD LO circuit harness and ground.
Is the voltage reading at the specified value?		 0 V Go to Step 7  Go to Step 5 
4  Test the 4WD LO circuit for an open, high resistance or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?		 - Go to Step 8  Go to Step 6 
5  Repair the 4WD LO circuit for short to voltage. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?		 - Go to Step 8  -
6 Replace the PCM. Refer to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.2L.
Did you complete the repair?		 - Go to Step 8  -

IMPORTANT: After transfer case shift control module replacement and reprogramming, ensure all doors are closed and the key is out of the ignition, then open and close the doors again and wait 2 minutes to avoid incomplete programming or false communication DTCs.
Replace the transfer case shift control module. Refer to Transfer Case Shift Control Module Replacement and Transfer Case Control Module Reprogramming  .Did you complete the repair?		 - Go to Step 8  -

  1. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
  2. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC as specified in the supporting text.
Does the DTC set?		 - Go to Step 2  System OK
