Washers Inoperative Diagnostic Test

DEFINITION: The windshield washer is inoperative.
1 Did you perform the Wiper/Washer Diagnostic System Check? - Go to Step 2  Go to Diagnostic System Check - Wiper/Washer

  1. Turn ON the ignition.
  2. Press the windshield washer switch.
Do the windshield washers operate normally?
- Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems Go to Step 3 
3 Do the windshield washer wipers operate when the windshield washer switch is pressed? - Go to Step 6  Go to Step 4

  1. Disconnect the windshield wiper motor pump connector.
  2. Test the resistance from the windshield wiper switch supply voltage circuit terminal to the windshield wiper switch signal 1 circuit terminal in the windshield wiper motor harness connector.
  3. Press the windshield washer switch.
Is the resistance near the specified value?
0.5 Ω Go to Step 15  Go to Step 5 
5 Test the following circuits for high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
  • Windshield wiper switch supply voltage circuit
  • Windshield wiper switch signal 1 circuit

Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 20  Go to Step 13

  1. Disconnect the windshield washer relay.
  2. Connect a test lamp test from each of the windshield washer relay battery positive voltage supply circuit terminals in the underhood fuse block to ground.
Does the test lamp illuminate on both terminals?
- Go to Step 7  Go to Step 9

  1. Connect a test lamp from battery positive voltage to the windshield washer relay control circuit terminal in the underhood fuse block.
  2. Turn ON the ignition.
  3. Press the windshield washer switch.
Does the test lamp illuminate?
- Go to Step 8  Go to Step 10

  1. Connect the windshield washer relay.
  2. Disconnect the windshield washer pump connector.
  3. Connect a test lamp across the windshield washer pump harness connector terminals.
  4. Turn ON the ignition.
  5. Press the windshield washer switch.
Does the test lamp illuminate?
- Go to Step 18  Go to Step 11 
9 Replace the underhood fuse block.
Is the repair complete?
- Go to Step 20  -
10 Test the windshield washer relay control circuit for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 20  Go to Step 15 
11 Test the windshield washer pump control circuit for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 20  Go to Step 12 
12 Test the windshield washer pump ground circuit for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 20  Go to Step 17 
13 Inspect for poor connections at the windshield wiper/washer switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 20  Go to Step 14 
14 Replace the windshield wiper/washer switch. Refer to Multifunction, Turn Signal Switch Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
Is the repair complete?
- Go to Step 20  -
15 Inspect for poor connections at the windshield wiper motor. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 20  Go to Step 16 
16 Replace the windshield wiper motor cover. Refer to Wiper Motor Cover Replacement .
Is the repair complete?
- Go to Step 20  -
17 Replace the windshield washer relay.
Is the repair complete?
- Go to Step 20  -
18 Inspect for poor connections at the windshield washer pump. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 20  Go to Step 19 
19 Replace the windshield washer pump. Refer to Washer Pump Replacement - Windshield .
Is the repair complete?
- Go to Step 20  -
20 Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
Did you correct the condition?
- System OK Go to Step 3
