Removal & Installation (8.1L)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use care when removing/installing Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor so as not to damage CKP sensor reluctor wheel/ring.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove fuel line bracket retaining nut, attached to top left bellhousing stud. See Fig 1. Remove fuel line bracket from bellhousing stud.
  2. Disconnect CKP sensor harness connector. Spray penetrating oil around CKP sensor and allow it to soak in before attempting removal from engine block. Remove CKP sensor retaining bolt. Twist CKP sensor back and forth several times prior to removal from engine block. Remove CKP sensor.
  3. Inspect CKP sensor for wear. CKP sensor is designed to contact reluctor wheel of crankshaft. Wear toward outside edges of CKP sensor tip is normal. Wear should not be visible toward center of CKP sensor tip. Replace CKP sensor as necessary. Inspect CKP sensor "O" ring for wear or damage. Replace as necessary. Lubricate CKP sensor "O" ring with clean engine oil.
  4. Clean CKP sensor retaining bolt hole of any debris. Install CKP sensor into engine block. Ensure CKP sensor is fully seated against crankshaft reluctor ring. Upper flange on CKP sensor may not seat against engine block.
  5. Apply Thread Adhesive (12345493) to CKP sensor retaining bolt threads. Install CKP sensor retaining bolt and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Perform CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE in COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
