Removal & Installation (8.1L)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

CAUTION: Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor retaining bolt has self-tapping threads. Care must be taken to not strip the threads when installing.

Raise and support vehicle. Remove steering linkage shield bolts and steering linkage shield (if equipped). Disconnect CMP sensor harness connector. See Fig 1.
Remove CMP sensor retaining bolt. Remove CMP sensor. If CMP sensor is not being replaced, inspect CMP sensor for wear, cracks or leakage. Inspect CMP sensor "O" ring for wear or damage. Replace as necessary.
Lubricate CMP sensor "O" ring with clean engine oil. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten CMP sensor retaining bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
