Removal Procedures

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece in Propeller Shaft.

  3. Check the coupling runout using J 8001 
  4. Observe the dial indicator and check the vertical runout. Maximum vertical runout is 0.05 mm (0.002 in).
  5. Observe the dial indicator and check the horizontal runout. Minimum horizontal runout is 0.05 mm (0.002 in).

  6. Remove the 4 bolts retaining the coupling cover (2) to the rear differential.
  7. Remove the coupling cover (6).
  8. Remove the coupling washer (3).
  9. Remove the coupling spacer (5).
  10. If required, remove the differential carrier front oil seal (4).
    11. IMPORTANT: The coupling is not serviceable and must be replaced as an assembly.

  11. Using a screw driver remove the dust deflector.
  12. Remove the viscous coupling.

  13. Remove the front coupling bearing using a press and J 22912-01

  14. Remove the rear coupling bearing using a press and J 22912-01
