Functional Inspection
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Functional Inspection is a mechanical system inspection for the coupling in the differential carrier and will assist in determining if:
- The coupling in the rear differential is operating correctly.
- There is a mechanical connection between the rear differential ring and pinion, the propeller shaft, the transfer case, the coupling and the transmission assembly.
- Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Lift the vehicle in a manner that will allow all four wheels to rotate during testing. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
- Start the engine.
- Move the gear shift lever to the DRIVE position.
- Fully apply the parking brake to create resistance in the rear wheels. The rear wheels should stop spinning. The front wheels should reduce in speed which indicates a correctly operating system.
IMPORTANT:
Do not accelerate the vehicle with the parking brake applied for a period longer than 5-7 seconds.
