Disassembly Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Remove the rear brake caliper from the vehicle. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement - Rear .

Use a flat-bladed tool in order to remove the caliper set ring (3).
Discard the caliper set ring.
Use a flat-bladed tool in order to remove the piston boot (2).
Discard the piston boot.

CAUTION: Do not place your fingers in front of the piston in order to catch or protect the piston while applying compressed air. This could result in serious injury.

CAUTION: Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.

NOTE: Use just enough air pressure to ease the piston out of the bore. You can damage a blown-out piston even with the padding.

Insert a shop cloth (2) into the caliper (1) in order to catch the piston.
Apply compressed air to the caliper brake hose connector hole in order to remove the piston from the caliper.

Use a flat-bladed tool in order to remove the piston seal (2).
Discard the piston seal.

Remove the bleeder valve cap (4).
Remove the bleeder valve (5).
Remove the slide pins (2,9).
Remove the slide pin boots (3,6,7).

IMPORTANT: DO NOT use abrasives in order to clean the caliper components.

Clean the following components in denatured alcohol or an equivalent brake parts cleaner:
- The slide pins
- The slide pin boots
- The piston
- The caliper housing
Dry the components and all the passages in the caliper housing using unlubricated, compressed air.
