Pressure Bleeding Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Pressure bleeding equipment must be the diaphragm type and must have a rubber diaphragm between the air supply and the brake fluid. Air, moisture, oil and other contaminants can damage the hydraulic system.
  1. Clean the outside of the brake fluid reservoir and the cap.
  2. Remove the reservoir cap.
  3. Remove the reservoir diaphragm.
  4. Install the J 39801-VIBE  , or equivalent, to the reservoir. See Special Tools and Equipment .
  5. Add brake fluid to the J 29532  , or equivalent, in order to raise the fluid level above the half mark. See Special Tools and Equipment .
  6. Connect the J 29532  , or equivalent, to the. See Special Tools and Equipment .J 39801-VIBE  , or equivalent. See Special Tools and Equipment .
  7. Charge the J 29532  , or equivalent, to 175 - 205 kPa (25 - 30 psi). See Special Tools and Equipment .
  8. Open the fluid tank valve for the J 29532  , or equivalent, in order to allow pressurized brake fluid to enter the hydraulic brake system. See Special Tools and Equipment .
  9. Wait 30 seconds.
  10. Inspect the hydraulic brake system for external leaks. Refer to Brake System External Leak Inspection .
  11. Remove the bleeder valve cap.

  12. Install a transparent hose (1) over the end of the bleeder valve (2). Submerge the other end of the hose in a transparent container (5) partially filled with brake fluid.
  13. Loosen the bleeder valve in order to purge air from the wheel hydraulic circuit.
  14. Close the bleeder valve.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bleeder valve to 8.3 N.m (73.5 lb in).

  15. Repeat this procedure until air (6) is purged from the wheel hydraulic circuit.
  16. Install the bleeder valve cap.
  17. Repeat this procedure at all bleeder valves that require bleeding.
  18. Close the fluid tank valve for the J 29532  , or equivalent. See Special Tools and Equipment .
  19. Remove the J 29532  , or equivalent, from the. See Special Tools and Equipment .J 39801-VIBE  , or equivalent. See Special Tools and Equipment .
  20. Remove the J 39801-VIBE  , or equivalent, from the reservoir. See Special Tools and Equipment .
  21. Replenish the brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir to the MAX mark and install the cap. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling .
  22. Slowly press and release the brake pedal. Observe the feel of the brake pedal.
  23. If the brake pedal feels spongy, repeat the bleeding procedure.
  24. Inspect the hydraulic brake system for external leaks. Refer to Brake System External Leak Inspection .
  25. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position with the engine OFF. Inspect the instrument cluster.
  26. If the brake system warning lamp remains illuminated, refer to Symptoms - Hydraulic Brakes .
