Test Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The numbers below refers to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 3:  This step attempts to repeat the condition that set the DTC.
  2. 6:  This step tests the circuit for an open or high resistance.
  3. 7:  This step tests the circuit for a short to ground.

2 Did you perform the Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure? - Go to Step 3  Go to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure 
  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
  3. IMPORTANT: Before clearing the DTCs, use the scan tool in order to record the Failure Records for reference. Using the Clear Info function will erase the stored Failure Records from the PCM.
  4. Record the Failure Records.
  5. Clear the DTC.
  6. Drive the vehicle for at least 7 minutes.
  7. Using a scan tool, observe Trans. Fluid Temp. for rapid fluctuations in temperature.
  8. Record the temperature at the start and end of the trip.
Was the transmission fluid temperature within the specified value?
50 - 80°C (122 - 176°F) Go to Step 9  Go to Step 4

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  2. Disconnect the PCM connector C1.
  3. Use a Digital Multi Meter (DMM) in order to measure the resistance between PCM harness connector C1 terminal 28 and terminal 30.
Is the resistance equal to the specified value?
Resistance should be 6.4k Ω at 10°C (50°F) and 0.2k Ω at 110°C (230°F). Go to Step 9  Go to Step 5

  1. Disconnect the transmission connector at the transmission.
  2. Use the DMM in order to measure the resistance between terminal 1 and terminal 6 on the transmission component connector.
Is the resistance equal to the specified value?
Resistance should be 6.4k Ω at 10°C (50°F) and 0.2k Ω at 110°C (230°F). Go to Step 6  Go to Step 8 
  1. Disconnect the transmission connector at the transmission.
  2. Disconnect the PCM connector C1.
  3. Test the transmission temperature sensor circuit for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 12  Go to Step 7 
  1. Disconnect the transmission connector at the transmission.
  2. Disconnect the PCM connector C1.
  3. Test the transmission temperature sensor signal circuit for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 12  Go to Step 10

  1. Remove the transmission oil pan.
  2. Inspect the terminals and internal harness for damage.
  3. Replace the TFT sensor if no damage exists. Refer to Solenoids and Wiring Harness Replacement .
Is the procedure complete?
- Go to Step 12  -

  1. Install a known-good PCM. Refer to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Replacement in Engine Controls-LV6.
  2. Perform the DTC Confirmation Procedure.
Does DTC P0711 reset?
- Go to Step 10  Go to Step 11 
10 Refer to Diagnostic Aids for a possible intermittent condition.
Is the procedure complete?
- Go to Step 12  -
11 Replace the PCM. Refer to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Replacement in Engine Controls-LV6.
Is the procedure complete?
- Go to Step 12  -

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
  2. Reconnect all the connectors.
  3. Perform the DTC Confirmation Procedure.
Does the scan tool display any DTCs?
- Go to the applicable DTC table System OK
