Removal Procedure

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the transaxle assembly. Refer to the following:
- Transaxle Replacement in Automatic Transmission - MU5 for all wheel drive automatic transaxle
- Transaxle Replacement in Automatic Transmission - MU4 for 4-speed automatic transaxle
- Transaxle Replacement in Manual Transmission - MK5 for 5-speed manual transaxle
- Transaxle Replacement in Manual Transmission - MTN for 6-speed manual transaxle
If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the clutch and pressure plate. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement in Clutch.

Remove the 8 flywheel retaining bolts.
Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.
Clean any grease or dirt from the crankshaft flange outer surface using a suitable solvent.
