When ignition is turned on, Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) performs tests to diagnose critical internal malfunctions. SDM provides input power to driver-side Electronic Frontal Sensor (EFS). When input power is detected, EFS responds by performing internal diagnostics. EFS then sends an identification message to SDM. SDM will consider identification message to be valid if received within 5 seconds of EFS powering up. EFS continually communicates a status message to SDM. SDM can reset EFS by removing and reapplying power to EFS.
