Instrument Panel (I/P) Disassembly Precautions

The center sensor assembly may maintain sufficient voltage in order to cause a deployment for up to 2 minutes. This deployment may occur under one of the following circumstances:
- After the ignition switch is turned to LOCK.
- The battery is disconnected.
Service procedures require disconnection of the following components from the deployment loop in order to avoid an accidental deployment:
- The IGN fuse
- The CIG fuse
- The RADIO fuse
- The steering column circuit (SRS coil assembly and inflator module)
NOTE:
In order to prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge damage to the PCM, Do Not touch the connector pins or the soldered components on the circuit board.
Some solid-state electrical components may be damaged by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD).
- Do not store the inflator modules at temperatures above 65°C (150°F).
- Do not use the following components if dropped from a height of 91.4 cm (3 ft) or more.
- Inflator modules
- Center sensory assemblies
- Do not apply power to the SIR except under the following circumstances:
- All the components are connected.
- A diagnostic chart requests power.
Powering up the SIR with the components disconnected will set a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).
- The SIR diagnostic System Check in the Supplemental Restraint System (SIR) is the starting point of any SIR diagnostics.
The SIR Diagnostic System Check will perform the following functions:
- Verify the proper air bag indicator operation
- Lead you to the correct chart in order to diagnose any SIR faults to avoid an extended diagnostic time
- Bypassing the SIR Diagnostic System Check procedures may result in the following circumstances:
- Extended diagnostic time
- An incorrect diagnosis
- An incorrect parts replacement
