Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE in Engine Electrical.

  2. Disable the driver and passenger SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in SIR.
  3. Remove the I/P upper trim panel. Refer to TRIM PAD REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) UPPER  in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  4. Remove the steering column. Refer to STEERING COLUMN REPLACEMENT in Steering Wheel and Column.
  5. Remove the body hinge pillar trim panels. Refer to TRIM REPLACEMENT - HINGE PILLAR in Interior Trim.
  6. Remove the sill plates. Refer to DOOR SILL PLATE REPLACEMENT in Interior Trim.
  7. Remove the front floor console. Refer to CONSOLE REPLACEMENT - FRONT FLOOR  in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  8. Remove glove compartment. Refer to COMPARTMENT REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P)  in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  9. Remove the HVAC control assembly. Refer to HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT (CONTROL ASSEMBLY) or HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT (A/C SWITCH) in HVAC Systems-Manual.
  10. Remove manual selector. Refer to MANUAL SELECTOR REPLACEMENT in Automatic Transmission (MU4) or MANUAL SELECTOR REPLACEMENT in Automatic Transmission (MU5).
  11. Disengage the hood release cable from hood release handle. Refer to HOOD LATCH RELEASE HANDLE REPLACEMENT in Body Front End.
  12. Remove the following components from the lower instrument panel:
    • The 8 bolts
    • The 4 push retainers
    • The wire harness clamps
  13. Remove the lower instrument panel by pulling rearward.
