Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Apply multi-purpose grease to the new crankshaft rear oil seal lip.

    Important:  Tap the oil seal in until its surface is flush with the crankshaft rear oil seal retainer edge.

  2. Using a hammer, lightly tap the crankshaft rear oil seal into place.

  3. Install the flywheel. Refer to ENGINE FLYWHEEL REPLACEMENT  .

  4. If equipped with a manual transmission, install the clutch and pressure plate. Refer to CLUTCH ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT in Clutch.
  5. Install the transaxle assembly. Refer to the following:
    • TRANSAXLE REPLACEMENT in Automatic Transmission - MU5 for all wheel drive automatic transaxle
    • TRANSAXLE REPLACEMENT in Automatic Transmission - MU4 for 4-speed automatic transaxle
    • TRANSAXLE REPLACEMENT in Manual Transmission - MK5 for 5-speed manual transaxle
    • TRANSAXLE REPLACEMENT in Manual Transmission - MTN for 6-speed manual transaxle
    NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE .
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the battery cable bolt to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
