Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix and 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to repair or alter the head impact energy-absorbing material glued to the headliner or to the garnish trims. If the material is damaged, replace the headliner and/or the garnish trim. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.
  1. Remove the sunshades. Refer to SUNSHADE REPLACEMENT  in Roof.
  2. Remove the sunshade anchors. Refer to SUNSHADE ANCHOR REPLACEMENT  in Roof.
  3. Disconnect the electric connector to the rear view mirror.
  4. Remove the overhead console, if equipped. Refer to CONSOLE REPLACEMENT - OVERHEAD (WITH STORAGE)  or CONSOLE REPLACEMENT - OVERHEAD (W/OUT STORAGE)  .
  5. Remove the power sunroof switch, if equipped. Refer to SUNROOF SWITCH REPLACEMENT in Roof.
  6. Remove the dome light, if equipped.
  7. Remove the assist handle. Refer to ASSIST HANDLE REPLACEMENT - FRONT  and to ASSIST HANDLE REPLACEMENT - REAR  .
  8. Remove the side rail lamp. Refer to ROOF SIDE RAIL LAMP REPLACEMENT (COUPE) or ROOF SIDE RAIL LAMP REPLACEMENT (SEDAN) in Roof.
  9. Remove the windshield pillar garnish molding. Refer to GARNISH MOLDING REPLACEMENT - WINDSHIELD PILLAR  in Roof.
  10. Remove the rear quarter upper trim panels. Refer to TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - REAR QUARTER UPPER (SEDAN)  .

  11. Pull down on the door opening weatherstrip seal on both the front and the rear doors.
  12. If sunroof, remove the finish lace from the sunroof opening. Refer to FINISHING LACE REPLACEMENT in Roof.
  13. Remove the rear push-in retainers (2) from the headliner using J 38778  .
  14. Disconnect the headliner electric harness at the right side of the rear window shelf.
  15. Rotate the right front seat back to a horizontal position.
  16. Remove the headliner from the vehicle through the right front door.
