Installation (Engine Has Been Rotated With Distributor Removed)
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Savana Special, 2002 GMC Savana Camper Special, 2002 GMC Savana, 2002 Chevrolet RV Cutaway, and 2002 Chevrolet Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- If engine was rotated after distributor was removed, remove No. 1 spark plug. Place finger over cylinder No. 1 spark plug hole. Crank engine slowly until compression is felt. The 2 marks on the crankshaft pulley should align with the 2 engine front cover tabs. See Fig 2. If necessary, rotate engine by hand until timing marks are fully aligned.
- Align White paint mark on bottom stem of distributor and the pre-drilled indent hole in the bottom of the gear. See Fig 3. Using a long screwdriver, align the oil pump driveshaft to the drive tab on the distributor.
- Carefully lower distributor into engine with flat side of distributor housing facing toward front of vehicle. See Fig 4. Once distributor is fully seated, distributor rotor should be aligned with pointer cast into distributor housing.
- If distributor rotor is not properly aligned, remove distributor and repeat procedure until mark aligns properly. Install distributor hold-down bolt and tighten to specification. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
WARNING:
Rotate the number 1 cylinder to Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke.
NOTE:
Use this procedure when any of the following components are removed: intake manifold, cylinder head, camshaft, timing chain or sprockets or the complete engine.
- The engine front cover has 2 alignment tabs and the crankshaft balancer has 2 alignment marks spaced 90 degrees apart which are used for positioning the number 1 piston at TDC. With the piston on the compression stroke and at TDC, the crankshaft balancer alignment mark must align with the engine front cover tab and the crankshaft balancer alignment mark must align with the engine front cover tab.
- Rotate the crankshaft balancer clockwise until the alignment marks on the crankshaft balancer are aligned with the tabs on the engine front cover and the number 1 piston is at TDC of the compression stroke.
- Align the White paint mark on the bottom stem of the distributor and the pre-drilled indent hole in the bottom of the gear. Use a long screw driver in order to align the oil pump drive shaft to the drive tab of the distributor. Guide the distributor into the engine. Ensure that the spark plug towers are perpendicular to the centerline of the engine. Once the distributor is fully seated, the rotor segment should be aligned with the pointer cast into the distributor base.
- If the rotor segment does not come within a few degrees of the pointer, the gear mesh between the distributor and the camshaft may be off a tooth or more. If the rotor segment does not come within a few degrees of the pointer, repeat the procedure again in order to achieve the proper alignment.
- Install the distributor mounting clamp bolt. Install the distributor cap. Install NEW distributor cap screws. If the malfunction indicator lamp illuminates after installing the distributor and DTC P1345 is set, the distributor has been installed incorrectly. Repeat procedure if the malfunction indicator lamp illuminates after installing the distributor. Install the engine cover.
NOTE:
The ignition system distributor driven gear and rotor may be installed in multiple positions. In order to avoid mistakes, mark the distributor on the following components in order to ensure the same mounting position upon reassembly: distributor driven gear, distributor shaft and the rotor holes. Installing the driven gear 180 degrees out of alignment, or locating the rotor in the wrong holes, will cause a no-start condition. Premature engine wear or damage may result.
