Removal Procedure

- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE .
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM .
- Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
- Remove the throttle body air inlet duct and the air cleaner assembly. Refer to AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY .
- Remove the hood. Refer to HOOD REPLACEMENT .
- Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
- Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
- Disconnect the following electrical connectors:
- Knock sensor
- Camshaft position (CMP) sensor
- Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
- Heated oxygen (HO2S) sensor
- Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
- Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve
- Evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge solenoid
- Throttle position (TP) sensor
- Idle air control (IAC) valve
- Ignition coil
- Body wiring harness-to-engine harness
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE .
- Remove the 3-way catalytic converter pipe from the right exhaust manifold. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT (3.1L) or CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT (3.8L) .
- Remove the engine wiring harness grounds from the transaxle.
- Remove the engine mount lower nuts.
- Remove the torque converter covers.
- Remove the starter motor. Refer to STARTER MOTOR .
- Remove the A/C compressor. DO NOT discharge the A/C system. Support the compressor. Refer to COMPRESSOR REPLACEMENT (3.1 L) or COMPRESSOR REPLACEMENT (3.8L) .
- Remove the torque converter bolts.
- Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to TRANSAXLE BRACE .
- Remove the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1).
- Remove the radiator outlet hose from the engine. Refer to RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - OUTLET (3.1 L) or RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - OUTLET (3.8L) .
- Lower the vehicle and support the transaxle.
- Remove the accelerator control and the cruise control cable with the bracket from the throttle body.
- Remove the heater outlet and inlet hoses from the engine.
- Remove the vacuum hoses from the upper intake manifold.
- Remove the brake booster vacuum hose from the upper intake manifold.
- Remove the fuel lines from the fuel rail. Refer to FUEL LINE DISCONNECT FITTINGS .
- Remove the radiator inlet hose from the engine. Refer to RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - INLET (3.1 L) or RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - INLET (3.8L) .
- Remove the power steering pump and reposition. Refer to POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT (3.8L) or POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT (3.1 L) .
- Install the engine lifting device to the engine.
- Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3,4,5) and stud (2).
- Remove the engine from the vehicle.
- Remove the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
- Install the engine to the engine stand.
- Remove the generator and the generator bracket. Refer to GENERATOR .
- Remove the engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
- Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
- Remove the ignition control module. Refer to IGNITION COILS .
