Installation Procedure

- Install the ignition control module. Refer to IGNITION COILS .
- Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
- Install the engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
- Install the generator and the generator bracket. Refer to GENERATOR .
- Remove the engine from the engine stand.
- Install the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
- Install the engine to the vehicle.NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE .
- Install the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3,4,5) and stud (2).
Tighten
Tighten the bolts (3,4,5) and the stud (2) to 75 N.m (55 lb ft).
- Remove the engine lifting device.
- Install the power steering pump. Refer to POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT (3.8L) or POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT (3.1 L) .
- Install the radiator inlet hose to the engine. Refer to RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - INLET (3.1 L) or RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - INLET (3.8L) .
- Install the fuel lines to the fuel rail. Refer to FUEL LINE DISCONNECT FITTINGS .
- Install the brake booster vacuum hose to the upper intake manifold.
- Install the vacuum hoses to the upper intake manifold.
- Install the heater inlet and outlet hoses to the engine.
- Install the accelerator control and the cruise control cable with the bracket to the throttle body.
- Raise the vehicle and remove the transaxle support.
- Install the radiator outlet hose to the engine. Refer to RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - OUTLET (3.1 L) or RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - OUTLET (3.8L) .
- Install the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1).
Tighten
Tighten the bolt (6) and the stud (1) to 75 N.m (55 lb ft).
- Install the transaxle brace. Refer to TRANSAXLE BRACE .
- Install the torque converter bolts.
- Install the A/C compressor. Refer to COMPRESSOR REPLACEMENT (3.1 L) or COMPRESSOR REPLACEMENT (3.8L) .
- Install the starter motor. Refer to STARTER MOTOR .
- Install the torque converter covers.
- Install the engine mount lower nuts.
Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 43 N.m (32 lb ft).
- Install the engine wiring harness grounds to the transaxle.
- Install the engine wiring harness ground nut to the transaxle stud.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 35 N.m (26 lb ft).
- Install the 3-way catalytic converter pipe to the right exhaust manifold. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT (3.1L) or CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT (3.8L) .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the following electrical connectors:
- Body wiring harness-to-engine harness
- Ignition coil
- Idle air control (IAC) valve
- Throttle position (TP) sensor
- Evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge solenoid
- Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve
- Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
- Heated oxygen (HO2S) sensor
- Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
- Camshaft position (CMP) sensor
- Knock sensor
- Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
- Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
- Install the hood. Refer to HOOD REPLACEMENT .
- Install the air cleaner assembly and throttle body air inlet duct. Refer to AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY .
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE .
- Fill the crankcase with engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
- Fill cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM .
- Check and fill the power steering system as necessary. Refer to CHECKING AND ADDING POWER STEERING FLUID .
- Perform a CKP system variation learn procedure. Refer to CKP SYSTEM VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE .
- Inspect for leaks.
