Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If removed, install the water pump to the engine front cover. Refer to WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT (3.1 L) or WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT (3.8L) .
  2. If removed, install the crankshaft position sensor to the engine front cover. Refer to CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR .

  3. Coat both sides of the lower tabs of the engine front cover gasket with sealant GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) or equivalent.

  4. Install the engine front cover gasket.

  5. Install the engine front cover.
    NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE .
  6. Install the engine front cover bolts (1, 2, 3).

    Tighten 

    • Tighten the small engine front cover bolts (1) to 27 N.m (20 lb ft).
    • Tighten the large engine front cover bolts (2,3) to 55 N.m (41 lb ft).

  7. Install the lower crankshaft position sensor wiring harness bracket to the engine front cover.

  8. Install the drive belt shield.
  9. Install the drive belt shield bolt.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolt to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

  10. Install the water pump pulley.
  11. Install the water pump pulley bolts.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

  12. Install the radiator outlet hose to the coolant pump. Refer to RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - OUTLET (3.1 L) or RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - OUTLET (3.8L) .
  13. Install the thermostat bypass pipe to the engine front cover. Refer to THERMOSTAT BYPASS PIPES REPLACEMENT .

  14. Install the power steering pump with lines. Refer to POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT (3.8L) or POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT (3.1 L) .
  15. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  16. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  17. Fill the crankcase with new engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  18. Fill the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM .
  19. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE .
  20. Perform a CKP system variation learn procedure. Refer to CKP SYSTEM VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE .
