Axle Shafts: Removal

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    4. NOTE: The wheel drive shaft nut must not be reused. Replace the wheel drive shaft nut with NEW nut whenever it is removed.
  4. Remove and discard the wheel drive shaft nut.
  5. Release the parking brake.
  6. Remove and support the brake caliper bracket.
  7. Remove the nut securing the park brake cable routing bracket, if necessary.
  8. Remove the bolt retaining the rear tie rod end from the rear suspension knuckle. Do NOT loosen the tie rod end jam nut.
  9. Loosen, but do not remove, the bolts securing the park brake cable bracket to the suspension knuckle.
  10. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  11. Install the Wheel Hub Remover onto the wheel hub and secure with wheel nuts. See Fig 1 .
  12. Begin to disengage the wheel drive shaft from the wheel hub and bearing.
  13. Remove the bolt and nut securing the upper control arm to the suspension knuckle.
  14. Disengage the wheel drive shaft completely from the wheel hub and bearing.
  15. Reposition the suspension knuckle toward the rear of the vehicle. Remove the Wheel Hub Remover from the wheel hub.
    16. NOTE: Support the wheel drive shaft until it is removed.
  16. Assemble the Slide Hammer Axle Shaft Remover Extension and Axle Shaft Puller. See Fig 2 and Fig 3 . Install the tool assembly evenly onto the rear beveled surface of the wheel drive shaft inner joint housing.
  17. Disengage the wheel drive shaft from the rear axle differential using the tool assembly, then remove the tool assembly.
  18. Remove the wheel drive shaft from the vehicle.
    19. NOTE: The differential output shaft oil seal must be replaced when removing the rear wheel drive shaft.
  19. Replace the rear wheel drive shaft oil seal.
