Axle Shafts: Installation

NOTE: Support the wheel drive shaft until it is completely installed. Do not damage the differential output shaft oil seal.
  1. Position the wheel drive shaft to the differential output shaft. Carefully align and guide the wheel drive shaft onto the differential output shaft.
  2. Install the wheel drive shaft fully onto the differential output shaft using light force.
  3. Verify that the wheel drive shaft is fully seated on the differential output shaft retaining ring by grasping the inner tripot housing and pulling outward. Do not pull on the wheel drive shaft bar. The wheel drive shaft will remain firmly in place when properly engaged.
  4. Begin to position the suspension knuckle to the wheel drive shaft. Align and carefully guide the wheel drive shaft into the hub and bearing but do not seat fully.
  5. Position the suspension knuckle to the upper control arm.
  6. Install the bolt and nut to the upper control arm/suspension knuckle assembly. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  7. Secure the park brake cable bracket.
  8. Install the rear tie rod to the rear suspension knuckle.
  9. Install the tie rod-to-knuckle bolt. Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  10. Install the brake caliper bracket.
  11. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  12. Install the park brake cable routing bracket and nut, if removed.
  13. Set the park brake.
  14. Install a NEW wheel drive shaft spindle nut. Slowly tighten the nut in order to draw the wheel drive shaft spindle into the wheel hub and bearing. Tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  15. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  16. Lower the vehicle.
  17. Release the park brake.
