Removal Procedure

CAUTION: Refer to SIR CAUTION .
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .

    Important:  Let the SIR coil hang freely after removal.

  2. Remove the SIR coil. Refer to SIR COIL ASSEMBLY .
  3. Remove the wave washer (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).

  4. Compress the cam orientation plate using J 23653-SIR  and J 42137.

  6. Remove the bearing retainer from the steering shaft assembly.
  7. Remove J 23653-SIR  and J 42137. 
  8. Dispose of the bearing retainer.
  9. Remove the cam orientation plate (5) from the steering shaft assembly.

  10. Remove the turn signal cancel cam assembly (4) from the steering shaft assembly.
  11. Remove the upper bearing spring (3) from the steering shaft assembly.
  12. Remove the upper bearing inner race seat (2) from the steering shaft assembly.
  13. Remove the inner race (1) from the steering shaft assembly.
  14. Remove the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly only. Refer to WIPERS/WASHER SWITCH REPLACEMENT in Wiper/Washers.
  15. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to MULTIFUNCTION, TURN SIGNAL SWITCH REPLACEMENT  .
  16. Slide the signal switch bracket off of the steering column shaft assembly.
  17. Remove the steering shaft and tilt head housing as an assembly. Refer to STEERING SHAFT, LOWER BEARING, AND JACKET REPLACEMENT (TELESCOPING)  or STEERING SHAFT, LOWER BEARING, AND JACKET REPLACEMENT (MANUAL)  .
  18. Remove the tilt head housing from the steering shaft.
