Diagnostic Procedures

- Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Does DTC P1359 also set? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 5.
- With the engine idling, observe the Misfire Current Cyl # display on the scan tool. Is the Misfire Current Cyl # incrementing for any even cylinders? If yes, go to step 6. If no, go to next step.
- Is the Misfire Current Cyl # incrementing for any odd cylinders? If yes, go to step 7. If no, go to step 15.
- With the engine idling, observe the Misfire Current Cyl # display on the scan tool. Is the Misfire Current Cyl # incrementing for two cylinders? If yes, go to step 8. If no, go to step 11.
- Inspect the front bank ignition coil cassette assembly for the following conditions:
- A disconnected or damaged harness connector.
- A loss of ignition module power or a loss of ground.
- Poor connections between the ignition module and the harness connector.
If a condition is found, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 16. If no, go to step 14.
- Inspect the rear bank ignition coil cassette assembly for the following conditions:
- A disconnected or damaged harness connector.
- A loss of ignition module power or a loss of ground.
- Poor connections between the ignition module and the harness connector.
If a condition is found, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 16. If no, go to step 14.
- Are the incrementing cylinders even (cylinders No. 2 and 8)? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 10.
- Turn the ignition OFF. Disconnect the front bank ignition coil cassette connector. Disconnect the PCM. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF. Test the cylinders No. 2 and 8 IC circuits for a short to voltage. If the condition is found, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 16. If no, go to step 15.
- Turn the ignition OFF. Disconnect the rear bank ignition coil cassette connector. Disconnect the PCM. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF. Test the cylinders No. 3 and 5 IC circuits for a short to voltage. If the condition is found, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 16. If no, go to step 15.
- Turn the ignition OFF. Disconnect the ignition coil cassette connector associated with the incrementing Misfire Current Cyl #. Connect DMM between the affected IC circuit and ground. Remove the fuel injector fuses. Measure the frequency of the affected IC circuit while cranking the engine. Does the frequency measure 1-2 Hz? If yes, go to step 13. If no, go to next step.
- Test the affected IC circuit for an open. If the condition is found, repair as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 16. If no, go to step 15.
- Test for poor connections between the ignition module and the harness connector for the affected IC circuit. If the condition is found, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 16. If no, go to next step.
- Replace the appropriate ignition module. After repairs, go to step 16.
- Replace the PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
- Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running DTC. Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 2.
- With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
