Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Is the AIR pump fuse okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  14.
  3. Did DTC P0412 or DTC P0418 also set? If yes, see P0412: SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SOLENOID RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT  or DTC P0418: SECONDARY AIR INJECTION PUMP RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT  . If no, go to next step.
  4. Install the scan tool. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF. Command the AIR system ON with a scan tool in output controls. Does the AIR pump turn ON? If yes, go to step  9. If no, go to next step.
  5. Turn OFF the ignition. Remove the AIR pump relay. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF. Probe the AIR pump relay battery voltage supply circuit terminal on the switch side of the relay using the test lamp connected to a good ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  16.
  6. Jumper the battery positive terminal to the AIR pump motor supply circuit at the relay harness connector using a fused maxi 40-amp jumper wire. Does the AIR pump turn ON? If yes, go to step  22. If no, go to next step.
  7. Disconnect the AIR pump electrical connector. Probe terminal "B" of the AIR pump electrical connector using the test lamp connected to battery ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  17.
  8. With the jumper still installed, test the ground circuit for an open. Connect the test lamp from terminal "B" to terminal "A" of the AIR pump harness connector. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  24. If no, go to step  18.
  9. Disconnect the vacuum source from the AIR solenoid valve. Connect a vacuum gauge to the vacuum source. Start and idle the engine. Is an engine vacuum displayed on the vacuum gauge? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  21.
  10. Turn OFF the ignition. Connect the vacuum source to the AIR solenoid valve. Disconnect the vacuum hose to the AIR shut-off valves at the AIR solenoid valve. Connect a vacuum gauge to the AIR solenoid valve port. Start and idle the engine. Command the AIR system ON with a scan tool in output controls. Is the engine vacuum displayed on the vacuum gauge? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  23.
  11. Inspect the vacuum lines to each AIR shut-off valve for the following conditions:
    • Kinks.
    • Restrictions.
    • Poor Connections.
    • Leaks.
    • Damage.

    Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  21. If no, go to next step.

  12. Disconnect both AIR intermediate hoses and/or pipes from the AIR shut-off valves. Start and idle the engine. Command the AIR system ON with a scan tool in output controls. Is air present at both hoses? If yes, see INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no, go to next step.
  13. Inspect for restrictions, for poor connections, or for damage at the following locations:
    • The AIR inlet hose and the AIR outlet hose from the AIR pump.
    • The AIR intermediate hoses and/or pipes.
    • The AIR crossover hose and/or pipe.
    • The AIR pump.

    If you find a condition, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  26. If no, see INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

  14. Turn OFF the ignition. Test the Battery Positive circuit for a short to ground. Remove the AIR pump relay from the underhood electrical center. Remove the AIR pump fuse from the underhood electrical center. Probe the battery feed terminal for the AIR pump relay harness connector with the test lamp connected to battery voltage. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  19. If no, go to next step.
  15. Disconnect the AIR pump harness connector at the pump. Test the AIR pump supply voltage circuit for a short to ground. Probe the AIR pump electrical connector terminal "B" on the harness side with the test lamp connected to battery voltage. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  20. If no, go to step  25.
  16. Repair the open circuit between the fuse and the relay. After repairs, go to step  26.
  17. Repair the open circuit between the AIR pump and the AIR relay. After repairs, go to step  26.
  18. Repair the faulty ground connection or the open ground circuit. After repairs, go to step  26.
  19. Repair the short to ground in the ignition feed circuit. After repairs, go to step  26.
  20. Repair the short to ground in the circuit between the AIR pump relay and the AIR pump. After repairs, go to step  26.
  21. Repair the vacuum hose as necessary. After repairs, go to step  26.
  22. Replace the AIR pump relay. After repairs, go to step  26.
  23. Replace the AIR solenoid valve. After repairs, go to step  26.
  24. Inspect for poor connections at the AIR pump electrical connector. Repair the poor connection as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  26. If no, go to next step.
  25. Replace the AIR pump. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. After repairs, go to next step.
  26. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running DTC. Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  27. With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
