Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. NOTE: If DTC P0385 is set, diagnose DTC P0385 before continuing with this procedure. See DTC P0385: CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR "B" CIRCUIT .
  3. Install the scan tool. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position, with the engine OFF. Raise the vehicle. Disconnect CKP "A" sensor connector. Test the 12-volt reference circuit of the CKP "A" sensor for the following conditions:
    • An intermittent open.
    • An intermittent short to ground.
    • Poor terminal contact at CKP "A" sensor.

    If a condition is found, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  6. If no, go to next step.

  4. Test the low reference circuit of the CKP "A" sensor for the following conditions:
    • An intermittent open.
    • Poor terminal contact at CKP "A" sensor.

    If a condition is found, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  6. If no, go to next step.

  5. Test the signal 2 circuit of the CKP "A" sensor for the following conditions:
    • An intermittent open.
    • An intermittent short to the sensor 12-volt reference circuit or to battery voltage.
    • An intermittent short to ground or to a sensor low reference circuit.
    • Poor terminal contact at CKP "A" sensor.

    If a condition is found, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  6. If no, go to next step.

  6. Test the following CKP "A" sensor circuits for poor terminal contact at the PCM:
    • The sensor 12-volt reference circuit
    • The sensor signal 2 circuit
    • The sensor low reference circuit

    If a condition is found, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  6. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .

  7. Lower the vehicle. Review and record the scan tool Failure Records data. Clear the DTCs. Using the scan tool, command the system to operate in Time "A" mode. See PROCEDURES FOR SELECTING CRANK POSITION SENSING DECODE MODE . Monitor the Specific DTC Information for DTC P0336. Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  8. With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
