Removal (4.0L)

  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . Remove rear seat cushion to access battery. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove mounting the 2 mounting nuts from the injector sight shield (top engine cover). Lift the injector sight shield off the mounting studs by lifting at the front of the cover.
  2. Clean the fuel rail assembly with a spray type Engine Cleaner (GM X-30A), if necessary. Follow the package instructions. Do not soak the fuel rail in liquid cleaning solvent. Disconnect the fuel feed and return pipes from the fuel rail. See FUEL LINE DISCONNECT FITTINGS .
  3. Remove vacuum line from fuel pressure regulator. Disconnect the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) air tube from the valve cover. Disconnect the PCV valve from the valve cover. Reposition the coolant surge tank inlet pipe. Remove the fuel rail bracket retainer nut.
  4. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors from each fuel injector. Lay the harness aside. Remove the fuel rail attaching studs. Remove the fuel rail. Remove the injector lower "O" ring seal from the spray tip end of each injector. Discard the "O" ring seals.
  5. To remove injectors from the fuel rail, remove the fuel injector by pushing the locking tab on the fuel rail toward the center of the fuel rail. Remove the fuel injector upper "O" ring and discard "O" rings.
