Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Start engine and let idle. Using scan tool, monitor IGNITION 1 voltage. Turn all accessories on while monitoring scan tool. Turn all accessories off while monitoring scan tool. If voltage is consistently 11-17 volts, go to step  4 . If voltage is less than 11 volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than 17 volts, replace generator.
  2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Ensure battery cables are clean and tight. Using DVOM, measure voltage at battery. Using scan tool, check IGNITION 1 voltage. If both readings are within 0.2 volts of each other, go to next step. If both readings are not within 0.2 volt of each other, repair open in Pink wire between underhood fuse block and ECM or poor connection in Black wire between ECM and ground.
  3. Disconnect generator connector. Using DVOM, measure voltage on "L" terminal at generator connector. If 4-6 volts are present, check charging system. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If 4-6 volts are not present, check Red wire for open between ECM and generator. If wire is okay, replace ECM.
  4. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using test light, check for voltage at ETC fuse (15-amp). If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is off, check ETC fuse. Replace fuse an retest if fuse is open. If fuse continues to open, repair short to ground in either White wire between underhood fuse block and ECM.
  5. Using a test light, check voltage at underhood fuse block connector (Gray 68-pin) terminals A8 and B8. If test light is on at both terminals, check for open in appropriate White wire. If wires are okay, replace ECM. If test light is off, check underhood fuse block connector. If connector is okay, replace underhood fuse block.
