Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue and 2002 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    NOTE: If DTC P0716, P0717, P0964, P0965, P0966, P1888, or P1889 has set, diagnose that DTC first.
  1. Record DTCs and failure record information. Clear DTC. Drive vehicle at constant speed greater than 45 MPH. Monitor TCC slip speed. Is TCC slip speed more than 220 RPM? If so, go to next step. If not, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  2. Using scan tool, monitor ISS. Is ISS signal reading on scan tool? If so, go to next step. If not, see DTC P0717: ISS LOW VOLTAGE  .
  3. Check the transmission fluid level. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Is level of fluid low? If so, add fluid as necessary. If not, go to next step.
  4. Inspect the control valve body for the following:
    • Stuck TCC PC solenoid or damaged "O" ring.
    • Stuck TCC enable solenoid or damaged "O" ring.
    • Line limit valve and spring for damage, sticking or binding.
    • TCC control valve and spring for damage, sticking or binding.
    • TCC regulator valve for damage, sticking or binding.
    • TCC regulator apply valve spring for damage, sticking or binding.
    • Control valve body for damage, porosity or contamination.

    Replace control valve body assembly if necessary.

    Inspect for the following:

    • Torque converter and housing seal for damage or engagement. Replace torque converter and seal as necessary.
    • Stator shaft assembly for debris or damage restricting fluid flow. Replace stator shaft assembly if necessary.
