Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 2:  This step verifies the malfunction is present.
  2. 3:  This test will isolate the KS from the rest of the circuit.
  3. 4:  Tapping on the engine block near the appropriate KS will simulate an engine knock.

1 Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? - Go to Step 2  Go to Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls
IMPORTANT: If an engine knock can be heard, repair the engine mechanical condition before proceeding with this diagnostic.
  1. Observe the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data for this DTC.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Operate the engine within the Conditions for Running the DTC as close to the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data that you observed.
Does the scan tool indicate that this diagnostic failed this ignition?
- Go to Step 3  Go to Diagnostic Aids
  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the KS harness of the appropriate KS.
  3. Set the DMM to the 400 K ohm scale.
  4. Measure the resistance of the appropriate KS with a DMM connected to battery ground.
Is the resistance of the KS within the specified range?
93-107K Ω Go to Step 4  Go to Step 6 
  1. Set the DMM to the 400 mv AC hertz scale. Refer to Measuring Frequency in Wiring Systems.
  2. IMPORTANT: Do not tap on plastic engine components.
  3. Tap on the engine block near the appropriate KS while observing the signal indicated on the DMM.
Is any signal indicated on the DMM while tapping on the engine block near the knock sensor?
- Go to Step 5  Go to Step 6

  1. Disconnect the PCM connector. Refer to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Replacement .
  2. Test the KS signal circuit between the PCM and the KS connector for the following:
    • An open
    • A short to voltage
    • A short to ground
Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 9  Go to Step 7 
6 Replace the KS. Refer to Knock Sensor (KS) 1 Replacement or Knock Sensor (KS) 2 Replacement .
Did you complete the replacement?
- Go to Step 9  -

  1. Inspect the KS signal circuit for a poor connection at the PCM or the KS harness connector. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.
  2. If you find a poor connection, repair the connector as necessary. Refer to Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
- Go to Step 9  Go to Step 8 
8 Replace the PCM. Refer to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Replacement .
Did you complete the replacement?
- Go to Step 9  -

  1. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC as specified in the supporting text.
Does the DTC run and pass?
- Go to Step 10  Go to Step 2 
10 With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info.
Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed?
- Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List System OK
