Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
  2. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts and runs, go to next step. If engine does not start and run, go to NO-START DIAGNOSIS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - CARS - EXCEPT METRO & PRIZM article.
  3. Using scan tool, establish communication with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Inspect for stored powertrain DTCs. Are any gasoline powertrain control module DTCs set? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, go to next step.
  4. Using scan tool, communicate with AF ECM. Clear DTCs stored in AF ECM. Turn ignition off for 10 seconds. Start engine and allow to idle. Recheck for DTCs. Did DTC P0336 set? If yes, go to step  6 . If no, go to next step.
  5. The fault is not present. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . Are any DTCs stored that have not been diagnosed? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  6. Inspect the 7X CKP sensor signal circuit for an open or high resistance between the circuit splice and the AF ECM connector terminal. Inspect for poor terminal contact at the AF ECM connector. Repair the wiring or terminal contact as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  8 . If no, go to next step.
  7. Replace AF ECM. See ALTERNATE FUEL ENGINE CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - CARS article. Program (flash) AF ECM with correct vehicle software and calibration. See ALTERNATE FUEL ENGINE CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After performing repairs and procedures, go to next step.
  8. Reconnect all disconnected components and connectors. Using scan tool, clear DTCs for PCM and AF ECM. Start engine and allow to idle until engine reaches normal operating temperature. Select DTC and specific DTC function. Enter DTC number and operate vehicle, within conditions for setting this DTC, until scan tool indicates diagnostic has run. See CONDITIONS FOR SETTING DTC  . If DTC diagnostic runs and passes, system is okay. If DTC resets, go to step  2 .
