Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the right exhaust manifold pipe nuts.

  3. Lower the vehicle.

  5. Loosen the air cleaner outlet duct clamp at the mass airflow/intake air temperature (MAF/IAT) sensor.

  7. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose.

  9. Remove the air cleaner adapter nut.

  11. In order to remove the air cleaner outlet duct, pivot the duct upward until the hinge clip releases from the lip on the throttle body.
  12. Remove the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 4.3L.

  14. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  15. Remove the spark plug wire retainer bolt.
  16. Reposition the wire retainer to the top of the engine.
  17. Remove the spark plugs.

  19. Remove the exhaust manifold and spark plug heat shield bolts.
  20. Remove the exhaust manifold and spark plug heat shields.

  22. Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gaskets.

  24. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield, if required.
  25. Clean all gasket mating surfaces.
