Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire, 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, 2002 Oldsmobile Alero, and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Install scan tool. Are any component related DTCs set? If yes, DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, go to next step.
  3. Inspect the vehicle for an adequate amount of fuel. Add fuel to the vehicles fuel tank if the tank is almost empty. Did you need to add fuel? If yes, go to step  5. If no, go to next step.
  4. Start engine. Warm engine to 167-203°F (75-95°C) at 1200 RPM. Observe the HO2S 1 voltage with the scan tool. The HO2S 1 voltage should vary from 100-900 millivolts and occasionally toggle at greater than 447 millivolts. Does the HO2S 1 voltage toggle? If yes, diagnose fuel system. If no, DTC P0134: HO2S CIRCUIT - INSUFFICIENT ACTIVITY (BANK 1; SENSOR 1 - SOHC) .
  5. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  6. With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If no, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If yes, system is okay.
