Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire, 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, 2002 Oldsmobile Alero, and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Install scan tool. Are any component DTCs set? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, go to next step.
  3. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within the Conditions for Running this DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Does the scan tool indicate that the DTC failed this ignition? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Turn ignition off. Inspect to see that the HO2S 1 is securely installed. Inspect for corrosion on the terminals. Inspect for terminal tension at HO2S 1 electrical connector, PCM electrical connector and HO2S 1 ground circuit for a good connection. Inspect for any damaged wiring. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  10. If no, go to next step.
  5. WARNING: Avoid contact with moving parts and hot surfaces while working around a running engine in order to prevent physical injury.
  6. Start engine. Inspect exhaust manifold for an exhaust leak near the engine. If a problem is found, repair as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  17. If no, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect HO2S 1 electrical connector at sensor. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Does scan tool voltage indicate that HO2S 1 voltage within 351-551 millivolts? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  10.
  8. Connect a jumper wire between HO2S 1 high signal circuit, on PCM side of high signal circuit to a ground. Does scan tool voltage indicate that HO2S 1 voltage is less than 20 millivolts? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  11.
  9. Inspect for poor connections at harness connector of HO2S sensor. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  17. If no, go to next step.
  10. NOTE: Determine and correct cause of contamination in order to prevent damage to replacement sensor.
  11. Turn ignition off. Replace HO2S 1. After repairs, go to step  17.
  12. Turn ignition off. Repair HO2S 1 high signal circuit for a short to ground. After repairs, go to step  17.
  13. Remove jumper wire. Measure voltage between HO2S 1 high signal circuit and ground using a DMM. Does HO2S 1 voltage measure greater than 407 millivolts? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  13.
  14. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM electrical connectors. Test HO2S 1 low signal circuit for continuity. If HO2S 1 low signal circuit measures greater than 5 ohms, repair for open circuit or faulty connector. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  17. If no, go to step  14.
  15. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM electrical connectors. Test HO2S 1 high signal circuit for continuity. If HO2S 1 low signal circuit measures greater than 5 ohms, repair for open circuit or faulty electrical terminal connection. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  17. If no, go to step  15.
  16. Inspect HO2S 1 low signal circuit for a poor connection at PCM. If you find a problem, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  17. If no, go to step  16.
  17. Inspect HO2S 1 high signal circuit for a poor connection at PCM. If you find a problem, repair the condition as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  17. If no, go to next step.
  18. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE in appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPROGRAMMING  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
  19. Use scan tool in order to clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within Conditions for Running DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  20. With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
