Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Connect scan tool. If any other DTCs are set, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no other DTCs are set, go to next step.
  3. Start engine. Allow the engine to idle. Observe the CMP Resync Counter with the scan tool. Is the CMP Resync Counter incrementing? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Ignition Control Module (ICM) connector. Using the J-35616-A Connector Test Adaptor Kit, jumper each wire from the ICM electrical connector to the ICM except the CMP circuit. Start and idle the engine. Observe the CMP Resync on the scan tool. Did the CMP Resync Counter stop incrementing? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7.
  5. Turn ignition off. Check for a faulty electrical connection at the ICM electrical connector. Repair electrical connector as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  9. If no, go to next step.
  6. Replace ICM. When complete, go to step  9.
  7. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) electrical connector. Check the CMP terminal for a faulty electrical connection. Repair terminal as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  9. If no, go to next step.
  8. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE in appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPROGRAMMING  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
  9. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  10. With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
