Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Using scan tool, command MIL on and off. If MIL turns on and off, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If MIL does not turn of and off, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM. Turn ignition on. Using a Digital Multimeter (DMM), measure voltage between the MIL control circuit at the PCM harness connector and ground. Is voltage about battery voltage? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7.
  4. Connect DMM to measure current between the MIL control circuit at PCM harness connector and ground. Monitor the current reading on the DMM for at least 2 minutes. Does the current reading remains 5-50 milliamps? If yes, go to step  12. If no, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the instrument panel harness connector. Leave PCM disconnected. Turn ignition on. Using DMM, measure voltage between the MIL control circuit and ground. Is voltage reading zero volts? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to next step.
  6. Locate and repair short to voltage in the MIL control circuit. After repairs, go to step  16.
  7. Check ignition feed fuse for instrument panel indicators. Is the fuse blown? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  9.
  8. Locate and repair short to ground in the ignition feed circuit for the instrument panel indicators. Replace fuse. After repairs, go to step  16.
  9. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between the ignition feed circuit for the instrument cluster indicators and ground. Is voltage reading about battery voltage? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  14.
  10. Check MIL control circuit for an open or a short to ground. If a problem is found, repair the MIL control circuit. Was a problem found and corrected? If yes, go to step  16. If no, go to next step.
  11. Check for poor connections at IPC C2 harness connector and PCM C2 harness connector. Repair connectors as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If connectors are okay, perform instrument cluster diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article.
  12. Turn ignition off. Reconnect PCM connectors. Remove Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Turn ignition on. Connect a test light between the MIL control circuit and ignition feed circuit at the instrument panel harness connector. Using scan tool, command MIL on and off. If test light turns on and off, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If test light does not turn on and off, go to next step.
  13. Check MIL control circuit for a poor connection at PCM. Repair connector as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If connector is okay, go to step  15.
  14. Locate and repair open in ignition feed circuit to IPC indicators. After repairs, go to step  16.
  15. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM. See PROGRAMMING . After repairs, go to step  16.
  16. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within conditions for running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC resets, go to step  2.
  17. Using scan tool, check for any other DTCs that are set. If no other DTCs are set, system is okay. If any other DTCs are set, repair DTCs as necessary. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
