Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. NOTE: If DTC P0412 or P0418 is also set, repair DTC before continuing with this test. See P0412: SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SOLENOID RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT  or DTC P0418: SECONDARY AIR INJECTION PUMP RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT  .
  3. Start and allow engine to reach normal operating temperature in Closed Loop. Use scan tool to command the AIR pump and solenoid ON, while observing the pre-catalyst HO2S voltage parameters. Does scan tool indicate pre-catalyst HO2S voltages are less than 50 millivolts for the duration of system operation? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS.  If no, go to next step.
  4. NOTE: If heat damage is indicated, replace shut-off valve on the bank that the damage is present.
  5. Check AIR system for pinched, kinked, restricted, or leaking pipes, hoses or fittings. Check for restricted AIR pump inlet duct/hose/filter. Check for pinched, kinked, restricted, or leaking vacuum lines. Check for heat damage. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  42. If no, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition on. Use scan tool to command the AIR pump and solenoid ON and OFF. Does the pump turn ON and OFF with each command? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  11.
  7. Use scan tool in order to command the AIR solenoid ON and OFF. Does solenoid turn ON and OFF with each command? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  14.
  8. Disconnect the pipe and/or hose from the inlets of the shut-off valves. Use scan tool to command the AIR pump and solenoid ON. Is airflow present at both hoses? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  16.
  9. Disconnect vacuum supply hose from AIR solenoid. Connect a vacuum gauge to disconnected vacuum hose. Start engine and allow to idle. If vacuum reading is more than 10 in. Hg, go to next step. If vacuum reading is 10 in. Hg or less, go to step  33.
  10. NOTE: Perform the following step for each AIR shut-off valve.
  11. Reconnect vacuum hose to AIR solenoid. Disconnect vacuum hose from AIR shut-off valve. Connect a vacuum gauge to disconnect vacuum hose. Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, command AIR solenoid on. If scan tool indicates vacuum readings for both AIR solenoids is more than 10 in. Hg, go to next step. If scan tool indicates one or both vacuum readings is 10 in. Hg or less, go to step  26.
  12. NOTE: Perform the following step for each AIR shut-off valve.
  13. Remove AIR shut-off valve. Connect a vacuum pump to AIR shut-off valve. Apply 10 in. Hg to valve. If vacuum holds for one minute, go to next step. If vacuum does not hold for one minute, go to step  37.
  14. NOTE: Perform the following step for each AIR shut-off valve.
  15. Ensure vacuum is still applied to AIR shut-off valve. Attempt to blow air through inlet side of AIR shut-off valve. If air blows freely through AIR shut-off valve, go to step  27. If air does not blow freely through AIR shut-off valve, go to step  37.
  16. Disconnect AIR pump relay. Turn ignition on. Using a test light connected to ground, probe the feed circuits. Does test light illuminate when probing both circuits? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  22.
  17. Using test light connected to battery voltage, probe control circuit of relay. Use scan tool in order to command the AIR pump and solenoid ON and OFF. Does test light turn ON and OFF with each command? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  17.
  18. Install a 30-amp jumper wire between relay switch feed and pump feed. Turn ignition on. Does the pump operate? If yes, go to step  28. If no, go to step  20.
  19. Disconnect AIR solenoid. Turn ignition on. Probe solenoid feed circuit with a test light connected to a good ground. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  23.
  20. Using a test light connected to positive battery voltage, probe solenoid control circuit at AIR solenoid harness connector. Using scan tool, command AIR solenoid on and off. Does test light turn on and off with each command? If yes, go to step  29. If no, go to step  17.
  21. Disconnect outlet pipe and/or hose from AIR pump. Using scan tool, command AIR pump and AIR solenoid on and off. If airflow is present at AIR pump outlet, go to step  36. If airflow is not present at AIR pump outlet, go to step  40.
  22. If test light stays illuminated with each command, go to step  24. If test light does not stay illuminated with each command, go to step  25.
  23. Ensure ignition is on. Disconnect AIR pump relay. If AIR pump stops operating, go to next step. If AIR pump does not stop operating, go to step  32.
  24. Using a test light connected to positive battery voltage, probe AIR pump relay control circuit at harness connector. Using scan tool, command AIR pump and AIR solenoid on and off. If test light turns on and off with each command, go to step  38. If test light does not turn on and off with each command, go to step  24.
  25. Ensure ignition is on. Leave jumper wire installed. Disconnect AIR pump. Connect test light between AIR pump feed and ground circuits. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to step  30. If no, go to next step.
  26. Using a test light connected to ground, probe AIR pump feed circuit at harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to step  35. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  34.
  27. Check for an open between AIR pump relay harness connector and AIR PUMP fuse in underhood fuse block. Also check for a short to ground between AIR pump relay harness connector and AIR pump harness connector. If any problems are found, repair wiring as necessary. After repairs, go to step  42. If wiring is okay, go to step  40.
  28. Check AIR solenoid feed circuit for an open or short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  42. If no, go to step  39.
  29. Test the control circuit for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  42. If no, go to step  41.
  30. Check the control circuit for an open or short to voltage. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  42. If no, go to step  31.
  31. Check vacuum hose for leak or restriction. Repair vacuum hose as necessary. After repairs, go to step  42. If vacuum hose is okay, go to step  39.
  32. Check for leaking or restricted AIR pipe/hose between shut-off valve and exhaust. If any problems are found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  42. If no problems are found, check for restricted exhaust system. Repair exhaust as necessary. After repairs, go to step  42.
  33. Check for poor connections at AIR relay connector. Repair connector as necessary. After repairs, go to step  42. If connector is okay, go to step  38.
  34. Check for poor connections at AIR solenoid connector. Repair connector as necessary. After repairs, go to step  42. If connector is okay, go to step  39.
  35. Check for poor connections at AIR pump connector. Repair connector as necessary. After repairs, go to step  42. If connector is okay, go to step  40.
  36. Check for poor connections at PCM connectors. Repair connectors as necessary. After repairs, go to step  42. If connectors are okay, go to step  41.
  37. Repair short to voltage between AIR pump relay and AIR pump. After repairs, go to step  42.
  38. Repair vacuum source. After repairs, go to step  42.
  39. Repair open between AIR pump relay and AIR pump. After repairs, go to step  42.
  40. Repair open between ground and AIR pump. After repairs, go to step  42.
  41. Repair leak or restriction in AIR pipe and/or hose between AIR pump and shut-off valve. After repairs, go to step  42.
  42. Replace shut-off valve. After repairs, go to step  42.
  43. Replace AIR pump relay. After repairs, go to step  42.
  44. Replace AIR solenoid. After repairs, go to step  42.
  45. Replace AIR pump. After repairs, go to next step.
  46. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM. See PROGRAMMING . After repairs, go to next step.
  47. Turn ignition off. Reconnect all disconnected connectors. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within conditions for running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC resets, go to step  2.
  48. Using scan tool, check for any other DTCs that are set. If no other DTCs are set, system is okay. If any other DTCs are set, repair DTCs as necessary. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
