Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Start engine. Using scan tool, monitor CMP sensor data. If scan tool indicates a CMP sensor RPM and a CAM signal are present, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate a CMP sensor RPM and CAM signal are present, go to step  5.
  3. Using scan tool, observe and record FREEZE FRAME/FAILURE RECORDS data for this DTC. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within conditions for running the DTC or as close to recorded FREEZE FRAME/FAILURE RECORDS data as possible. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . If DTC resets, go to step  5. If DTC does not reset, go to next step.
  4. Ensure engine is running. Observe scan tool and wiggle CMP sensor wiring harness. CMP sensor is located in front of right (rear) cylinder head. If CMP sensor status changes or RPM becomes erratic, go to step  11. If CMP sensor status does not change and RPM does not become erratic, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect CMP sensor connector. CMP sensor is located in front of right (rear) cylinder head. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and Red wire at CMP sensor harness connector. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step  12.
  6. Connect a Digital Multimeter (DMM) between the 12-volt reference circuit and low reference circuit in the CMP sensor harness connector. Is voltage reading battery voltage? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  13.
  7. Monitor the Cam Sensor Data on scan tool. Using a test light connected to B+, momentarily touch the signal circuit several times at the connector. Is RPM indicated on scan tool? If yes, go to step  17. If no, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector C1. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using DMM, check for voltage on signal circuit. Is voltage present? If yes, go to step  16. If no, go to next step.
  9. Use DMM in order to check the signal circuit for continuity between CMP sensor harness connector and PCM harness connector. Is resistance less than or equal to 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  14.
  10. Use DMM in order to check for continuity between the signal circuit and ground. The DMM should display infinite resistance. Is resistance infinite? If yes, go to step  19. If no, go to  15.
  11. Repair wiring harness or connectors as necessary. After repairs, go to step  21.
  12. Check and repair sensor 12-volt reference circuit. After repairs, go to step  21. If no problem is found,  19.
  13. Check and repair open or high resistance in sensor low reference circuit. After repairs, go to step  21. If no problem is found, go to step  19.
  14. Repair open or high resistance in sensor signal circuit. After repairs, go to step  21.
  15. Repair short to ground in sensor signal circuit. After repairs, go to step  21.
  16. Repair short to power in sensor signal circuit. After repairs, go to step  21.
  17. Check for poor connections and poor terminal tension at CMP sensor connector. Repair connector as necessary. After repairs, go to step  21. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  18. Replace CMP sensor. After repairs, go to step  21.
  19. Check for poor connections at PCM connectors. Repair connectors as necessary. After repairs, go to step  21. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
  20. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM. See PROGRAMMING . After repairs, go to next step.
  21. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within conditions for running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC resets, go to step  2.
  22. Using scan tool, check for any other DTCs that are set. If no other DTCs are set, system is okay. If any other DTCs are set, repair DTCs as necessary. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
