Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, refer to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Start engine. Does scan tool indicate that DTC P0036 is current? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  3. Inspect fuse in HO2S 2 ignition 1 voltage circuit. Is fuse open? If yes, go to step  13. If no, go to next step.
  4. Remove oxygen sensor wiring harness heat shield. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Disconnect HO2S 2 electrical connector. Use a known-good ground. DO NOT use HO2S 2 heater low control circuit or HO2S 2 low reference circuit. Using a test light connected ground, probe ignition 1 voltage circuit at engine harness side of HO2S 1 electrical connector. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8.
  5. Connect test light between HO2S ignition 1 voltage circuit and HO2S 2 heater low control circuit. Start engine. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7.
  6. Turn ignition off. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to step  9. If no, go to step  11.
  7. Turn ignition off. Connect test light between a good ground and HO2S 2 heater low control circuit. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to step  10. If no, go to step  9.
  8. Repair open in ignition 1 voltage circuit. After repairs, go to step  16.
  9. Repair open or short to ground in HO2S 2 heater low control circuit. After repairs, go to step  16. If no problems are found, go to  14
  10. Check for short to voltage in HO2S 2 heater low control circuit. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If circuit is okay, go to  14.
  11. Check for poor connection and poor terminal tension at HO2S 2. If a poor connection is found, replace terminals. Did you find and correct the condition? After repairs, go to step  16. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  12. Replace HO2S 2. After repairs, go to step  16.
  13. Locate and repair a short to ground in HO2S 2 ignition 1 voltage circuit. Replace fuse. After repairs, go to step  16.
  14. Check for poor connections at PCM connectors. Repair connectors as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
  15. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM. See PROGRAMMING . After repairs, go to next step.
  16. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within conditions for running DTC as specified in Conditions For Running DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC resets, go to step  2.
  17. Using scan tool, check for any other DTCs that are set. If no other DTCs are set, system is okay. If any other DTCs are set, repair DTCs as necessary. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
