Removal Procedure

- Remove the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement (4.3L Engine) in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
- Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
- Remove the engine shield bolts and shield.
- Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector (5).
- Remove the CKP sensor bolt and sensor.
- Remove and discard the CKP sensor O-ring seal.
- Remove the front cover bolts.
- Remove and discard the front cover.
- Clean all sealing surfaces.

IMPORTANT:
After the composite front cover is removed do not reinstall the front cover. Always install a NEW front cover.
