Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2002 Pontiac Bonneville, 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 2002 Chevrolet Impala, and 2002 Buick Regal.   1. Perform Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls, go to next step.
  2. Install a scan tool. Start the engine. Monitor the DTC information using the scan tool. Does the scan tool display any other DTCs set? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, go to next step.
  3. NOTE: If engine knock can be heard, repair mechanical problem before proceeding with test.
  4. Observe FREEZE FRAME/FAILURE RECORDS data for this DTC. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within Conditions for Running DTC or as close to FREEZE FRAME/FAILURE RECORDS data as possible. Does the DTC failed this ignition cycle? If yes, go to next step. If no, see INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  5. Disconnect the affected KS harness. Set the DMM to the 400 k/ohm scale. Measure the resistance of the KS using the DMM that is connected to a good ground. Is the resistance of the KS near 100 K/ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  9.
  6. NOTE: DO NOT tap on plastic engine components.
  7. With the DMM that is still connected, set the DMM to the 400-mV AC Hertz scale. Tap on the engine block near the affected KS while observing the signal that is indicated on the DMM. Is any signal indicated on the DMM while tapping on the engine block near the KS? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  9.
  8. Turn off the ignition. Disconnect the PCM harness connector. Test the KS circuit for an open or high resistance, for a short to ground or for a short to voltage. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to next step.
  9. Inspect the KS signal circuit for a bad terminal connection at the affected KS. Repair any conditions that are found. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to next step.
  10. Inspect the KS signal circuit for a bad terminal connection at the PCM. Repair any conditions that are found. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to step  10.
  11. Replace the affected KS. After repairs, go to step  11.
  12. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
  13. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within Conditions for Running DTC. Does DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  3.
  14. Using scan tool, observe stored information. Does scan tool displays any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
