Diagnostic Procedures
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2002 Pontiac Bonneville, 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 2002 Chevrolet Impala, and 2002 Buick Regal. - Perform Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls, go to next step.
- Install a scan tool. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, command boost solenoid on and off. Do you hear a click when you command the solenoid on and off? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 4.
- Turn off the ignition. Disconnect the PCM connector containing the boost solenoid control circuit. Turn on the ignition, with the engine off. Using a DMM on the 10-amp scale, measure current from the boost solenoid control circuit in the PCM harness connector to ground for 2 minutes. Does the current remain within 0.05-0.80 A (50-800 mA)? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If no, go to step 8.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect boost control solenoid. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using a DMM, measure the voltage between the boost solenoid control circuit at the solenoid harness connector and a good ground. Is voltage zero volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 10.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect boost solenoid connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. Connect a test light between boost solenoid connector terminals. Using scan tool, command boost solenoid on and off. Does the test lamp turn on and off with each command? If yes, go to step 8. If no, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, engine off. Probe the ignition 1 voltage circuit of the boost solenoid harness connector with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 12.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect boost solenoid. Disconnect the PCM connector containing the boost solenoid control circuit. Turn on the ignition, with the engine off. Probe the boost solenoid control circuit in the PCM harness connector with a 3-amp fused jumper wire connected to a good ground. Does the solenoid operate, is there an audible click? If yes, go to step 11. If no, go to step 9.
- Check boost solenoid connector for a poor connections. Did you find and correct a condition? If yes, go to step 15. If no, go to step 13.
- Repair the boost solenoid control circuit for an open or short to ground. After repairs, go to step 15.
- Repair the boost solenoid control circuit for a short to voltage. After repairs, go to step 15.
- Inspect for a poor connection at the PCM harness connector containing the boost solenoid control circuit and repair as necessary. Did you find and correct a condition? If yes, go to step 15. If no, go to step 14.
- Repair the open or short to ground in the boost solenoid ignition 1 voltage circuit. After repairs, go to step 15.
- Replace boost solenoid. After repairs, go to step 15.
- Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within Conditions for Running DTC. Does DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 2.
- Using scan tool, observe stored information. Does scan tool displays any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
