Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE .
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM .
  3. Remove the engine cooling fan assembly. Refer to FAN CLUTCH REPLACEMENT .
  4. Remove the generator mounting bracket.
  5. Remove the generator mounting bracket stud from the cylinder head.

  7. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement - Lower .
  8. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - RIGHT .
  9. Remove the oil level indicator and tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  10. Remove the spark plug wire harness and spark plug wire support.

  11. Remove the bolt and the ground strap from the rear of the cylinder head.

  12. Remove the bolt and the ground wires from the rear of the cylinder head.
  13. Secure the ground strap and the ground wires out of the way.
  14. Remove the valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  15. Remove the spark plugs.

  16. Remove the cylinder head bolts.

    NOTE: After removal, place the cylinder head on two wood blocks to prevent damage.
  17. Remove the cylinder head.

  18. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.

  19. Remove the dowel pins (cylinder head locator) (if required).

  21. Clean the engine block and the cylinder head sealing surfaces.
    NOTE: Clean all dirt, debris, and coolant from the engine block cylinder head bolt holes. Failure to remove all foreign material may result in damaged threads, improperly tightened fasteners or damage to components.
  22. Clean the cylinder head bolts and the engine block bolt holes.
  23. For further service to the cylinder head refer to the following:
