Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 GMC Safari and 2003 Chevrolet Astro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the pitman arm. Refer to STEERING LINKAGE (NON-RACK & PINION) or STEERING LINKAGE (NON-RACK & PINION) in Steering Linkage.
  2. Remove the snap ring (1) using J 4245

  3. Remove the following components from the power steering gear (1):
    1. 3.1. The dust seal (5)
    2. 3.2. The return ring (4)
    3. 3.3. The washer (3)
    4. 3.4. The pitman shaft oil seal (2).
  4. Inspect the pitman shaft surface for roughness or pitting. Replace the pitman shaft if the shaft is pitted.
  5. Clean the pitman shaft and seal areas using a wire brush.
