Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 GMC Safari and 2003 Chevrolet Astro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING in General Information.
    CAUTION: Refer to FLOOR JACK CAUTION in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Support the lower control arm with safety stands.

  3. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove the wheel speed sensor harness bracket retaining bolt and nut.
  5. Remove the upper control arm center pin and the retaining.

  6. Disconnect the steering knuckle from the upper ball joint using J 23742.

  7. Remove the upper control arm from the steering knuckle.
  8. Support the steering knuckle in order to prevent the knuckle weight from damage the brake hose.

    Important:  Note the location of the alignment shims. Replace the shims in the same location from which these were removed.

  9. Remove the upper control arm mounting bolts and the shims.
  10. Remove the upper control arm mounting bolts. Lift and upper control arm in order to gain access to the bolts.
  11. Remove the upper control arm.
